Encrypt & Store: a bookmarklet-based vault on the early iPhone

The 2008 web tool encoded password-protected text into a bookmarklet, an unusual approach to saving sensitive notes.

Encrypt & Store was a web utility linked at alannet.com/iphone/encrypt/. The February 18, 2008 article described entering text and a password, encrypting the text and saving the result as a bookmarklet. Editing the data generated a new bookmarklet to save.

The bookmark carried the saved information

This is the distinctive workflow. Instead of treating a bookmark only as a pointer to a website, the tool used it as part of the storage mechanism. Updating a saved record therefore meant replacing or saving a newly generated link, not simply assuming that an existing bookmark had changed.

The original article said the data did not cross the internet. That is a historical implementation claim, not a security finding established by this recovery. The source does not document the cryptographic algorithm, key handling, browser storage behavior or protection against a modified copy of the page.

No encryption audit or sensitive-data test was performed here. This article records an early approach to storing private text; it does not recommend the legacy tool as a present-day password manager. Current operation and compatibility of its generated bookmarklets remain unverified.
