An iPhone RSS reader gathers articles from websites you choose into one reading list. It is useful when you want to follow a handful of publications without remembering to visit each site. Start with a small list of sources; an unread count should help you find something to read, not become another inbox to clear.
Why start with NetNewsWire?
NetNewsWire is a free, open-source RSS reader for iPhone, iPad and Mac. It supports direct feed downloading, folders, starred articles, search and views for unread or recent stories. Its official site also lists syncing with iCloud and several services, including Feedly, Feedbin and Inoreader. Choose a service you already use before building a second, separate collection of subscriptions.
Add your first feeds
- Install a compatible version using the download links on the developer’s site.
- Choose whether your subscriptions should stay on the device or sync through an account.
- Add a publication’s website or feed address. You can try this site’s iPhoneApplicationList RSS feed.
- Put related publications in a folder and star stories you want to revisit.
The developer’s iPhone help book explains local accounts, adding feeds and moving subscriptions. That help book is labeled for version 6; button locations may differ in the current release. Use the help index to find documentation for your installed version.
Moving from another RSS app
Look for an OPML export in your old reader. OPML carries a list of feed subscriptions, making it easier to move without finding every website again. NetNewsWire supports importing and exporting these lists. Keep a copy before reorganizing a large collection.
If you already organize your reading in Feedly, compare the official Feedly app with a NetNewsWire account connected to Feedly. Check each service’s current plan and compatibility requirements rather than assuming every feature is included.
A reading routine that stays manageable
Begin with five sources you would miss if they disappeared from your routine. Remove feeds you consistently skip, and open the original publisher’s page when you need context. For other ways to improve reading on your phone, see our guide to Safari extensions on iPhone.
