UpNext 3D Cities for iPhone: the app and its Amazon history

Revisit UpNext 3D Cities, identify the original iPhone app, see its historical screenshot, and learn how the team joined Amazon.

UpNext 3D Cities was an early iPhone and iPad mapping app from UpNext, LLC. Our old listing at App Store ID 312759829 described searchable city maps built around three-dimensional streets and buildings. This archive guide identifies that original app and explains where the team went.

What UpNext offered on iPhone

The June 2010 snapshot of our UpNext listing names New York City, San Francisco, Boston, Washington, DC and Austin among its mapped cities. Users could tap and search the maps rather than treating them as static pictures.

The captured version 1.6 notes describe added San Francisco coverage, elevation in San Francisco and New York, bus maps in San Francisco and improvements to the iPad version. They also mention trees in the New York map for iPhone 3GS and iPad users. The screenshot reproduced here is an actual historical iPhone product image linked from that listing; it shows the app’s interface at the time.

What happened to the company?

In his account of the UpNext and Amazon Maps project, cofounder Robin Har says he started UpNext in 2007 with Danny Moon, Vik Advani and Raj Advani. He describes a team working on interactive 3D maps and a proprietary rendering engine.

Har dates Amazon’s acquisition of UpNext to July 2012 and says the team moved to Seattle to work on Amazon’s mapping initiative. That company history does not establish that the original iPhone app is still supported or downloadable.

Can you download the old app today?

Apple’s US catalog returned no result for the original identifier when checked on October 15, 2026. We therefore do not present a current download link or claim that an old installation will work with today’s iOS. A similarly named modern app should not be assumed to be this product.

If your aim is to explore a city on a current iPhone, Apple Maps is a separate current option. Apple describes detailed city maps, Look Around and Flyover, with availability varying by location. It is not a continuation of UpNext or a way to recover old UpNext data.
