iLOL for iPhone: TipMobile’s early photo-caption community

The 2009 iLOL app let people caption a photo and publish it to a shared community. Here is the original product behind the old link.

iLOL was TipMobile’s iPhone app for making and sharing captioned pictures. The original January 19, 2009 entry names the developer and describes a simple workflow: take a photo or choose one from the library, add a caption, and upload it to the ilol.me community.

From camera to a shared joke

The interesting part was the connection between creation and distribution. The original description included notifying friends after a new picture was uploaded. An archived March 2009 community page corroborates the product: it displays a stream of captioned pictures, credits TipMobile, Inc., and links to Apple app ID 301307839.

That evidence separates this app from later products using iLOL as a name. It also places the entry in the early period of phone-first photo sharing, when a camera, a caption and a dedicated community could form a complete app idea.

Make the caption work with the picture

A good caption adds a second thought instead of merely describing what is visible. Keep it short enough to read at phone size, check that it remains legible over the photo, and consider whether the joke still makes sense without the surrounding conversation.

Before sharing a photo of somebody else, make sure they are comfortable with that use. Keep a separate original if you want the uncaptioned image later. These are editorial suggestions for photo sharing, not unverified iLOL editing features.

Historical availability

The archived pages establish the app and its community in 2009. They do not establish a working present-day upload service or current installation compatibility. This restoration preserves that history and uses a new contextual preview; it does not advertise a relaunched iLOL service.
