White Noise by TMSOFT is an app for playing ambient sounds and creating soundscapes. Its official product page describes built-in sounds, mixing, recording and looping, along with a community sound library. Those are the developer’s present descriptions, rather than a claim that every feature existed in the version discussed here in 2009.
Choose a setting before choosing a sound
A background for reading may be different from one used while packing a suitcase or winding down in the evening. Decide what you want the sound to accompany. Then start with one consistent option, such as a fan-like sound or rain, rather than building a complicated mix immediately.
Listen for details that attract your attention: a repeated birdcall, a sharp splash or an obvious break where a recording loops. A sound can be pleasant in isolation yet distracting when repeated for a long task. Let a short sample run while doing the intended activity before deciding whether it belongs in your routine.
Adjust one element at a time
If you create a mix, add a second layer only when it contributes something useful. Change its level, listen again and compare with the simpler version. More layers do not necessarily create a more comfortable result. Keeping a note of the combination makes it easier to return to a setting you liked.
Use a modest playback level and keep relevant real-world sounds audible. For a timed activity, decide when the audio should stop and check any available timer behaviour before relying on it.
Judge the experience, not the promise
This guide does not treat an ambient-audio app as a treatment for insomnia, tinnitus or another health condition. The practical test is whether a chosen background feels comfortable and helps you maintain the atmosphere you want. A successful soundscape often becomes less noticeable as you settle into the activity around it.
