Toko is a Winter 2022 Y Combinator company that makes an iPhone app for practicing spoken English with AI. According to YC, it is aimed at English learners in East Asia who want to build speaking fluency through short, realistic conversations and grammar feedback. The app is positioned as a low-pressure way to practice speaking without arranging live 1:1 tutoring. (ycombinator.com; apps.apple.com)

On the App Store, Toko describes itself as an AI English tutor for speaking practice. The app says users can choose from dozens of topics for work and daily life, have back-and-forth conversations with an AI, and review transcripts and translations when needed. Toko also says each conversation usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes, which makes it suitable for short daily practice sessions. (apps.apple.com)

Toko’s core feature is conversation-based practice. The App Store listing says it gives instant grammar feedback while the conversation is happening and helps users build confidence by letting them take their time and make mistakes. The company’s YC description adds that it offers more than 500 topics, covering scenarios from small talk to workplace discussions. (apps.apple.com; ycombinator.com)

To get the app, users can download Toko from the App Store page or from the company’s download page, which also links to Google Play. The App Store lists the iPhone app as free with in-app purchases, and the download page says Toko offers a 7-day free trial. The App Store also says the app requires iOS 15.0 or later on iPhone. There are a few practical limits to note. The App Store says subscription pricing and plans may vary by region, and it lists both monthly and annual auto-renewing subscriptions. It also says the app is designed for iPhone and iPad, supports English plus eight other languages, and has not yet had accessibility features formally indicated by the developer. The app is part of YC’s Winter 2022 batch. (apps.apple.com; ycombinator.com)
