Eco-app of the Week: iGreenpeace and Alex the Penguin

Revisit iGreenpeace, the 2010 iPhone app that paired Alex the Penguin’s clapping game with environmental news and ways to get involved.

iGreenpeace brought environmental campaigning to the iPhone through a penguin, a simple game and a stream of organization news. Our July 12, 2010 Eco-app of the Week entry covered the app sold by Greenpeace Licensing B.V., identified in the archived page as Apple app ID 345036175. This restored article revisits that original release.

Meet Alex the Penguin

Alex was the app’s central character. The original review described a clapping game that introduced global warming and the challenges surrounding action on it. A familiar, playful character gave the subject an approachable starting point, particularly for families looking for something to discuss together.

The appeal was the connection between the game and the wider subject. A short play session could lead to questions about penguins, their environment and the decisions people make.

News and ways to get involved

The archived review also documented a Greenpeace news feed, an activist sign-up option and links for voluntary donations. These gave interested readers a route from learning about the organization to following its work or supporting a campaign. Signing up and donating were separate choices; the presence of those features did not require every player to use them.

The listing showed version 1.0 and a free download, with a February 14, 2010 release date. Those details describe the historical product.

A historical app, a lasting design idea

iGreenpeace illustrates an early approach to mobile outreach: combine a small interactive experience with information and optional next steps. The recovered source establishes what the app offered in 2010, but does not verify present-day installation compatibility or functioning news, registration and donation services.
