When a news app feels too noisy, start by identifying which interruption you want to change. A push alert, an email newsletter and the stories on the opening screen are controlled in different places. Adjusting one should not be expected to reorganise all the others.
How do you choose CNN alert topics?
CNN’s alert instructions direct app users to Settings and Alerts, where topic selections can be enabled or disabled. Choose a small set that deserves an interruption. You can still open the app to read other coverage when you have time.
Give the new selection a normal day before making another round of changes. Otherwise, it is hard to know whether a useful alert disappeared because its topic was disabled or because a broader phone setting changed. A simple note of the options you chose can make troubleshooting easier.
What controls the sound and presentation?
The same CNN guidance points to iPhone Settings, Notifications and CNN for system-level notification controls. Use those settings when the issue is how an alert appears or sounds. Use CNN’s own topic controls when the issue is its subject.
If nothing arrives, inspect both layers. An enabled category inside an app cannot by itself explain whether the phone is permitted to present its notifications. Record the exact symptom: no banner, no sound or no alert for a particular topic.
Can you change the opening news selection?
CNN’s app preferences guide identifies US and International editions and explains that the choice changes Top News. Check that selection if the opening screen seems aimed at a different audience than you expected.
Email newsletters have a separate management route in the CNN profile. Turning off a phone alert is therefore not an unsubscribe action. For a calmer routine, decide when to browse, which subjects warrant a push notification and which newsletters you actually read. Assign each preference in its corresponding setting.
