Danger Cats!: the early iPhone puzzle about removing the right support

A look back at Fire Maple Games’ Danger Cats!, where tapping away objects safely was the puzzle—and why the creator’s archive matters today.

Danger Cats! was an early Fire Maple Games puzzle built around a deceptively simple action: remove an object and see what falls. The developer’s own history page identifies it as the studio’s first mobile game and says it is no longer available. The named Danger Cats path preserved here refers to that historical title.

A puzzle about the objects underneath the cat

In a 2010 WNYC interview, creator Joe Kauffman described cats perched on stacks containing objects such as blocks and watermelons. The player removed items to bring the cat safely down. The challenge was therefore less about controlling an animal directly than understanding how its supports would respond.

That distinction gives the concept its appeal. Removing something on the left can change the balance on the right. An apparently unnecessary object may be doing useful work by slowing a fall or stopping a slide. The picture is both the scene and the puzzle.

How to read this kind of physics puzzle

Start with the intended resting place and work backward. Identify which objects support the cat, which merely obstruct its route and which could destabilize a safe platform. After a removal, give the movement time to settle before deciding on the next action. A sequence can fail because of timing even when its individual choices initially look sensible.

When replaying a level, change one decision at a time. That makes it easier to understand whether the problem was the first support removed, the angle of a falling object or an action taken too early. This is an approach to the puzzle design, not a claim that every stage has one solution or that the game was tested on a modern device.

A small piece of early App Store history

Fire Maple’s account places Danger Cats! before its later adventure games. It is a useful reminder that a studio’s first mobile project may look quite different from the work for which it becomes known. The historical title is also distinct from unrelated games using similar cat imagery. Because the creator reports that it is unavailable, this page preserves its identity and premise rather than offering an unverified download.
