iPhone Duo demand is surging as Apple’s first foldable ships slips to 2027

Apple’s first foldable is seeing strong pre-order demand, with some iPhone Duo shipping estimates reportedly slipping into 2027.

Apple’s first foldable phone is getting a launch-day reaction as much as a launch. The iPhone Duo is now on pre-order on Apple’s own site, but within hours of orders opening, shipping estimates reportedly slipped from the original launch window into 2027 for some buyers. That rapid change has turned the story from a simple product debut into an early test of demand for Apple’s new foldable category. [1] [3]

According to Apple’s newsroom announcement, pre-orders for iPhone Duo began Friday, Oct. 16, at 5 a.m. PT, with availability set to begin Oct. 23. Apple’s product page also says the device is available starting 10.23, which gives buyers an official reference point even as delivery estimates appear to be moving quickly. The company’s launch materials present the phone as a major new step, but the early shipping changes suggest supply is already under pressure. [2] [1]

9to5Mac reported that Apple later described iPhone Duo pre-order demand as “extraordinary,” citing a statement shared with CNBC. That wording is important because Apple is not publicly breaking out order totals or inventory levels, so the company is acknowledging strong interest without confirming how many units have actually been sold. In other words, the headline isn’t just that iPhone Duo exists; it’s that Apple seems to be struggling to keep pace with demand right away. [3] [5]

There is also a practical supply context around the launch. 9to5Mac reported before pre-orders that Apple was expected to have limited initial inventory, and that production orders had reportedly been increased ahead of launch. Those reports are not Apple-confirmed, so they should be treated as supply-chain color rather than settled fact. Still, they fit the pattern of a new premium device that appears to have attracted more attention than Apple can immediately satisfy. [5] [4]

One separate wrinkle is the launch experience itself. Mark Gurman reported on X that Apple retail stores would customize the iPhone Duo’s first boot with the buyer’s name in U.S. stores, in English and Spanish only. That detail is not central to the demand story, but it shows Apple is trying to make the company’s first foldable feel more personal at retail while online shipping windows are already stretching out. For now, the bigger takeaway is that iPhone Duo is off to a conspicuously strong start before most buyers have even seen one in person. [4]
