Santana for iPhone: music, lessons and the story behind the app

Santana’s 2009 iPhone app brought together music, a discography, news and guitar lessons. Here is what its developer documented.

The Santana app brought an artist’s music and background into a dedicated iPhone experience. Santana’s official announcement appeared on March 3, 2009, immediately before this site’s March 4 entry. WebSight Design built the app for both fans exploring the catalogue and musicians interested in how the songs were played.

More than a list of tracks

In a March 31 developer case study, WebSight Design described approximately 25 music tracks and 12 videos, alongside a discography, biography, news and tour dates. The album information included links to purchase music through iTunes. Those figures describe the early app, not the size of any current Santana streaming catalogue.

The most distinctive section was Lessons, reached from the More area. It included videos covering Black Magic Woman and Oye Como Va, bringing material associated with the website’s Musician’s Corner into the app. The developer said the aim was to give listeners a closer view of the musicians’ working methods.

Listening with a purpose

A useful approach to artist-led music lessons is to listen once for the whole performance, then return to a short phrase. Pay attention to timing, articulation and the space between notes before trying to reproduce every detail. Comparing that phrase with the full track keeps the exercise connected to the song.

The discography also offers a different route through an artist’s work: follow an album rather than a shuffled selection, and notice how the musical setting changes from one recording to another. These are editorial listening suggestions, not additional software features.

This is a historical overview of the 2009 app. Its old media links, purchases and compatibility have not been verified on current devices.
