The Wikipedia entry at this March 25, 2008 URL described a web application for reading, searching and browsing encyclopedia articles on iPhone and iPod touch. Its short description emphasized formatting for the smaller display and advertised saving articles for offline viewing.
The surviving page does not establish who developed that web reader or whether it had a direct relationship with the Wikimedia Foundation. It should not be treated as an announcement of the later official iOS app.
The enduring idea: take a reading list with you
A phone-sized article view makes a reference work easier to carry. Saving selected pages addresses a different problem: keeping a useful set of information available when a connection disappears. A bookmarked web address alone does not prove that the underlying article has been downloaded.
That distinction is useful when preparing material for a journey. Choose the articles you need in advance and confirm that the saved copies open while the device is offline. Following a link to another article may still require a connection unless that page has also been saved.
The official option today
The current Wikipedia app from the Wikimedia Foundation is a separately identifiable product, app ID 324715238. Wikimedia’s official iOS FAQ documents saved articles and their images being available offline, while downloading articles and using discovery features requires an internet connection.
This restored page connects the old mobile-reading idea with a verified current option. It does not imply that the unidentified 2008 web application is still operating or that its advertised storage behavior was tested.
