IONBowling: a tap-based bowling game for the early iPhone

IONBowling at mynumo.com centered its original iPhone design on a simple tap-anywhere interface.

IONBowling was a browser bowling game linked at mynumo.com/iphone/ibowl/ibowl.php. The August 6, 2007 listing described an iPhone-specific design with a tap-anywhere interface.

A large target for a small screen

The input idea is more distinctive than the original promotional praise for its graphics. A tap-anywhere interface reduces the need to find a tiny control before acting. For a game played in short sessions, that can make the relationship between attention and input easier to understand.

That description does not, however, establish exactly what a tap controlled. Timing, direction, power and release could be mapped in different ways. The archive supplies no rules detailed enough to choose among them, and this article does not substitute the controls of a modern bowling app.

Current playability, scoring and device compatibility have not been tested. This historical overview preserves IONBowling’s original web address and documented interaction premise, without repeating the old claim that it was the best alternative to visiting a bowling alley.
