iTree — The Original turned a seasonal greeting into a small creative activity. Its November 2008 product announcement describes decorating a Christmas tree on an iPhone or iPod touch and sending it as a personalized electronic postcard. Recipients needed an email address rather than an Apple device of their own.
The activity is part of the greeting
A digital card becomes more meaningful when the sender makes a few deliberate choices. A favourite colour, a shared joke or a reference to the year you spent together can make a simple image feel more personal than an elaborate card selected at random.
That is the interesting part of iTree’s historical design. The phone was both the place to assemble the greeting and the way to deliver it. The recipient did not need to learn the creation tool to enjoy the result.
Design for the person opening it
When making a digital greeting today, begin with a short message and one clear visual idea. Keep text readable on a small screen. If the image carries essential words, repeat the message in the accompanying email so the greeting still works when images are hidden or difficult to see.
Send a test to yourself before mailing the finished version. Check the crop, spelling and attachment size, and make sure the image opens without requiring an unfamiliar account. A decorative effect that only works inside your chosen app may disappear when the recipient views the message elsewhere.
Preserve the finished card
The surviving announcement establishes what iTree offered at the time; it does not confirm that the original application is available or compatible today. Save the completed greeting as an ordinary image where your creation tool permits it. Keeping the card alongside family photographs makes it accessible after the seasonal app is forgotten. The lasting idea is pleasantly modest: a little hands-on decoration can give an everyday email the feeling of a card made especially for someone.
