Apple updates iPhone Duo guidance for developers and App Store screenshots

Apple is telling developers how to optimize apps for iPhone Duo, including new App Store screenshot requirements and a badge for supported apps.

Apple is now giving developers a fresh checklist for iPhone Duo, the company’s foldable device, with guidance aimed at making apps adapt cleanly to the inner display and changing fold states. In Apple’s latest developer instructions, the company says apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later are optimized for iPhone Duo, while older builds will still run but may not take full advantage of the hardware. Apple also ties that guidance to App Store optimization, including a new badge for supported product pages. [1] [4]

The update is less about a flashy consumer launch than about making sure apps behave well on a device that can change shape in use. Apple tells developers to avoid hardcoded screen sizes and instead rely on dynamic layout APIs so interfaces can respond to fold and unfold changes. That matters for apps that need to stretch across the larger display without breaking navigation, media layouts, or controls when the device switches modes. [1]

Apple also says developers should test their apps in several places before shipping updates: Device Hub, the iPhone Duo simulator, and iPhone Mirroring. According to the company’s guidance, those tools are meant to show how an app behaves when the screen shape changes and when content expands across the inner display. For developers, the practical takeaway is that compatibility is no longer enough; layout polish is part of the new baseline. [1]

App Store Connect is part of the story too. Apple says product pages can display an iPhone Duo optimization badge when developers submit the right screenshots, and it is laying out a future requirement as well: starting in April 2027, submitted apps and games will need iPhone Duo screenshots. That makes the current update a merchandising change as much as a technical one, since screenshot submission now affects both presentation and readiness signals. [1] [2]

Apple’s release notes reinforce that this guidance is current, not archival. The developer site shows an App Store Connect update on October 30, 2026, and Apple’s newsroom page for iPhone Duo provides the official product imagery referenced by the company’s rollout. Taken together, the materials point to a broader Apple push: prepare apps now, use the newer SDKs, and make the App Store surface that work clearly to customers. [3] [4]
