MythBusters reached the iPhone as an official companion app in March 2010. It was an example of a television programme becoming more than a schedule entry on a phone: fans could explore related material and interact with the brand between broadcasts. This retrospective explains that format without claiming the old app can still be downloaded.
A companion to the programme
Discovery’s April 2010 announcement of the iPad edition explicitly describes it as building on the recently launched iPhone and iPod touch app, and identifies Phunware as its development partner. The announcement documents a companion-app format combining video, games and social interaction. Its feature list concerns the iPad release; it should not be treated as an exact inventory of the earlier iPhone version or as a current streaming entitlement.
Extra footage is a different product
A companion app and a full episode service answer different needs. Someone looking for an entire season should check the programme’s present official distribution, including the country and subscription involved. Someone interested in how a production was made may care more about an interview or a short behind-the-scenes segment.
For archival material, record the title and original date where possible. A clip detached from its context can make a staged television sequence look like a standalone instruction, or make an old announcement appear current.
Enjoy the curiosity, keep the context
The appeal of MythBusters includes asking how a claim could be examined. A useful viewer habit is to separate the question, the demonstration and the conclusion. Television editing necessarily selects what the audience sees; it is not the same thing as having a complete experimental record.
