AccuWeather’s 2007 iPhone widget: forecasts in Safari

This historical link covered AccuWeather’s Safari weather widget, not its later App Store app. Revisit the forecast and map features described at the time.

The AccuWeather page at this July 3, 2007 URL covered a weather widget designed for the first iPhone’s browser. The original archive capture points to apple.accuweather.com/widget/iphone1/iphone.html. That destination matters: it identifies the early Safari experience, rather than automatically referring to the company’s later native app.

Forecasts, hourly detail and maps

The brief historical description advertised a 15-day forecast, hourly information, radar and satellite maps. It also mentioned severe-weather alerts for US locations. Those are the features described in the original record, not a measurement of forecast accuracy, evidence of current alert delivery or a claim about today’s regional coverage.

Putting those views together gave the user several ways to frame a question. A broad forecast could support plans for the week, while the hourly view addressed a narrower part of the day. Maps added spatial context. The value lay in choosing the view relevant to the decision instead of treating every weather number as interchangeable.

A page designed around a new screen

Apple had announced support for third-party web applications in June 2007. A focused weather widget illustrates how an established information service could reach the new phone through a browser, with a smaller, task-oriented interface than a general website.

For an archived screenshot, keep the location and forecast timestamp alongside the image. Without them, an attractive map or temperature can be mistaken for current information. Likewise, a historical list of alert features does not establish that an old endpoint still updates or is suitable for a time-sensitive decision.

Finding AccuWeather now

The current AccuWeather website provides the company’s present forecast services and links to its apps. Consult that current source for today’s options. Operation of the original 2007 widget remains unverified. This is a newly written historical overview, with no forecast or alert test. Explore our app archive for more of the first iPhone’s web tools.
