Free Books by Spreadsong: what “free” meant in the original app

Revisit the original Free Books reader, its catalog model and the distinction between an app’s price and the books inside it.

Free Books in this August 5, 2009 article was a Spreadsong, Inc. reading app with App Store ID 317776727. The archived listing describes a downloadable catalog, a built-in reader and saved reading positions.

The historical name needs one qualification: the description said the books were included after paying for the application. “Free Books” therefore should not be interpreted as proof that the original app itself cost nothing.

Separate the reader from the catalog

The surviving description also mentioned sending a book as a PDF and reading downloaded material without a connection. These features describe the period’s offering; they do not establish the present catalog or distribution terms.

When comparing reading tools, ask two separate questions. Does the app contain the works you want, and does its reading interface suit those works? An attractive reader cannot provide a missing edition, while an extensive catalog is less useful if the text is difficult to navigate.

Check the actual edition

A title and an author are a starting point. Translation, editing, illustrations and completeness can differ between editions of the same work. Inspect the book itself before assuming two catalog entries provide an equivalent reading experience.

For a long book, try the contents navigation and the process of returning to a saved place. A brief sample can reveal whether the app makes it easy to resume after an interruption. That is often more informative than the catalog’s headline size.

Read historical pricing as historical

The old listing’s catalog count and claims about public-domain material are records of its promotion at that time. They are not a current worldwide rights statement, and this article does not repeat the promotion’s claim that there were no restrictions.

The useful identifiers for an old bookmark are Spreadsong and app ID 317776727. Current availability, price and included content remain unverified here, keeping this historical reader separate from later applications with the same generic title.
