PhotoToMac: moving early iPhone photographs over Wi-Fi

Revisit Galarina’s PhotoToMac and the distinction between transferring an image and preserving all of its information.

PhotoToMac was a Galarina app for sending photographs from an iPhone to a Mac over Wi-Fi. The archived July 2, 2009 listing describes transferring full-resolution camera images to a shared folder on the Mac, without requiring an internet connection.

This reconstruction concerns the historical version. Its old Mac requirements and sharing setup are not presented as current configuration instructions.

The destination was part of the workflow

The original description required a shared folder accessible to a guest user and directed readers to separate setup instructions. That is a reminder that a transfer app depends on both ends of the connection: choosing a picture on the phone does not establish that a destination is ready to receive it.

For any transfer workflow, begin with a small test. Send one unimportant image, locate it at the destination and open it there. This checks more than a progress indicator: it confirms that the file reached the place where you expect to use it.

Image size and metadata are different

The archived PhotoToMac description explicitly said transferred pictures lacked EXIF information, including location data. That limitation belongs to the documented version and should not be generalized to every photo-transfer tool.

It illustrates a useful distinction. Pixel dimensions describe one aspect of an image file; accompanying information can describe when or how it was made. Decide which parts matter to your own archive before judging a transfer solely by how the picture looks.

Verify before reorganizing

Compare a sample at the source and destination before deleting or rearranging originals. Use recognizable filenames or a small known batch so that a misplaced folder or incomplete transfer is easier to spot.

PhotoToMac’s historical role was focused: make camera pictures available on a nearby Mac through a wireless connection. The Galarina identity and shared-folder approach distinguish it from later services, while the surviving record does not establish whether this original app is still distributed or supported.
