In June 2010, 5-0 Radio Pro Police Scanner offered an unusual way to use an iPhone: choose an online broadcast and listen to what was happening somewhere else. Its catalog mixed police, fire and emergency-service feeds with aviation, railroad, news and music stations.
The app appeared in iPhoneApplicationList’s June 16 review under Apple ID 341776037. The accompanying listing named James Leung as the seller and linked to SmartestApple. This is a look back at that version and its features.
Finding a feed worth following
The original review described several ways to navigate the catalog. Listeners could search by keyword or city, browse categories, or look through a list of the most popular streams. An integrated map helped locate available scanner feeds, while aviation searches could use an airport code.
Favorites made frequently used stations easier to reach. The app also supported adding a feed manually and sharing a stream by email. Rather than treating the catalog as a fixed set of channels, it gave listeners ways to build a smaller collection around their own interests.
What the Pro version added
The 2010 review highlighted recording and emailing audio, a sleep timer, additional station categories and interface skins among the Pro features. It also described automatic reconnection after a dropped connection and an in-app browser for finding more streams.
Those details explain the app’s appeal at the time: search, listening and a personal station list were gathered into one small-screen interface. The features and catalog described here belong to the historical release; they should not be read as a statement of today’s pricing, coverage or compatibility.
