SmugMug’s Camera Awesome belonged to a period when a separate camera app could become the centre of an iPhone photographer’s workflow. Shooting, editing and sharing inside one application was convenient. It also made the app’s own photo library something worth protecting.
What happened to Camera Awesome?
SmugMug’s official support notice says Camera Awesome ceased to be supported with the iOS 11 transition. The company explains that accommodating Apple’s development changes would have required rebuilding the app, and it chose to concentrate on SmugMug instead. An old recommendation for Camera Awesome should therefore be read as history, not as a current installation recommendation.
Check the photographs before changing an old device
If you still have an installation that opens, the useful question is whether its images also exist outside the app. SmugMug documents selecting images from the gallery and saving them to the Camera Roll, with a choice between original and edited versions. Consult those instructions alongside the screens on the device; an inaccessible app cannot be made usable simply by following instructions written for a working installation.
Preserving both versions is a sensible archival choice when possible. The original keeps your options open for future edits, while the edited copy preserves the appearance you deliberately created. After exporting, inspect several files outside Camera Awesome and make a separate backup before treating the transfer as complete.
A useful habit for every camera app
Choose an ordinary photograph and follow it from capture through export to backup. Confirm that you can identify the original, locate the final edit and open both in another viewer. That little exercise exposes an unclear workflow before years of pictures accumulate inside it. Camera Awesome’s legacy is a reminder that creative tools change, while the photographs they help us make should remain accessible.
