The first iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max impressions are in, and Apple may have pulled off something unusual: making an “S-year” iPhone surprisingly exciting.
At first glance, the iPhone 18 Pro looks a lot like the iPhone 17 Pro. The familiar 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch sizes remain, while Apple has refined the design with a smaller Dynamic Island and four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier and the eye-catching new Burgundy.
But the biggest upgrades are hiding inside.
The Camera Is Finally Going Full “Pro”
The headline feature is Apple’s new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture.
For the first time on an iPhone, you can switch between ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0, either automatically or using the new Pro camera controls. Apple has also added manual shutter speed, white balance and a histogram.
That gives photographers significantly more control over low-light shots, depth of field and motion. TechRadar’s first hands-on singled out the variable aperture as one of the features that immediately made the iPhone 18 Pro more interesting.
This may be the biggest reason for creators to upgrade.
A20 Pro Might Be the Real Star
Then there’s the A20 Pro.
Apple’s new 2nm chip is paired with a much larger vapor-chamber cooling system designed to maintain high performance for longer. Early benchmarks and testing suggest substantial performance gains, but perhaps more importantly, the chip appears to be dramatically more efficient.
MKBHD went as far as naming his review “All About that Chip,” describing the iPhone 18 Pro as essentially an S-year upgrade with one particularly impressive component.

Battery Life Is Getting Serious
Battery life could be the upgrade people notice every single day.
Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches a huge 45 hours. Wired charging can now hit 50% in around 15 minutes with a compatible 60W adapter.
Tom’s Guide recorded 18 hours and 27 minutes from the Pro Max in its battery test, versus 17 hours and 54 minutes for the previous Pro Max.
So… Is It Actually Exciting?
That depends on what you’re upgrading from.
The design isn’t revolutionary, and reviewers consistently describe the iPhone 18 Pro as refinement rather than reinvention. But after a week of use, 9to5Mac described the Pro experience as essentially having no major compromises thanks to its cameras, performance and battery life.
The catch is price. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, both with 256GB. That’s $100 more than last year.
For iPhone 17 Pro owners, this probably isn’t a must-upgrade generation. But for anyone coming from an iPhone 14 Pro, 15 Pro or older device, the combined jump in cameras, battery, performance and charging could feel enormous.
