While the Gizmodo controversy was certainly exciting, Apple’s official announcement of the iPhone 4 might be the best thing since sliced bread. The upgraded device, which is available for preorder on June 15 and will hit stores on June 24,  will feature exciting elements such as:
cameras on the front and back of the phone (ideal for apps like Skype and will be the push needed to bring Chat Roulette to the iPhone), a new gyroscope (so that the phone knows exactly how it is positioned and can respond to position changes; a perfect addition for games), retina display for the highest resolution screen, the ability to switch between 3rd party apps instantly, HD video recording and editing, and a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash (flash could also become a flashlight in dark situations). The potential of these features is endless, and they could be used to enhance or create some pretty incredible things on the iPhone.  What do you think of these additions? Which apps would you like to have that will use these new features on the iPhone? How else could these features be applied? We’d love to hear your comments and ideas!

Since its creation over ten years ago, Netflix has not only thrived in the electronic entertainment industry in which it inhabits, but it has also created a new playing field for the development of DVD rental services. With an attempt by its competitors to offer similar services for lower prices, Netflix quickly took control of the reigns by offering its customers with new release updates, the ability to watch TV shows and movies instantly, and of course, a low monthly rate of only $8.99. Yet, despite all of Netflix’s accomplishments, there was little time to rest before the mobile world forced corporations, including Netflix, farther along into the depths software development. The hilariously dark and cynical webcomic Cyanide and Happiness is now available as an app for the iPhone.  Cyanide and Happiness is a webcomic produced almost daily by explosm.net and features adult-themed strips played out by stick figure-esque characters.  The app includes all of the options available on the website, such as the comic archive and the video shorts.  It also includes some new features, like the “favorites” button which allows users to save their favorite strips to their iPhone and the “Last Read” button which brings readers back to the last comic they read.  Users have the option to link a comic to sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit to share it with their friends.  This app gives you everything you expect from the website without forcing you to plant yourself in front of your computer all day to enjoy some good (bad?) laughs.

Guitar Hero is everywhere. Little kids play it. Grandmas have tried it – (before giving it up because of arthritis). It’s so addictive that students stop studying to play it. You can probably find at least one kid with Guitar Hero in a college dorm’s hallway(personal experience). Guitar Hero has conquered the world, and it has finally invaded the one place where it has never been before: The world of iPhone & iPod Touch. Read the rest of this entry »

Social networking has fueled another craze with its recent link to Location Based Services. Now, with many mobile apps, you can “check in” to certain places, letting people know exactly where you are, what you’re doing, and any comments about the experience. This phenomenon redefining social scenes by enabling and facilitating real-world meet-ups in a whole new way and changing the way we vicariously live through people. One app to pioneer this enormous trend is Foursquare. While we’re sure you have heard of it, go to http://adclub.org/bigorangecouch to see an exclusive interview with the founder, Dennis Crowley (date: 5/12), and gain even more insight into one of the hottest apps around.

However, Foursquare is not the only app of its kind. This video highlights some of the other apps, available for iPhone and iPad, that are following the LBS trend and may prove to be stiff competition.
