All you need to run GPSed application is GPS receiver. You can write tracks even being offline. You will need an internet connection to share your tracks or to store them at http://gpsed.com/

I enjoy going hiking and canoeing. I wanted to know if I could use this to keep track of my trips, How Far did I go and How long it took me. Thanks James
