We are less than 2 weeks from being launched into the holiday season, which means travel is inevitable. If you happen to be driving home for any of the holidays, then the trip alone risks ruining the good cheer. Well, not to fear; Waze is here! This app makes driving infinitely more fun (and informative) by combining the best elements of a social networking app AND a GPS. Not only does it give you voice-guided step-by-step directions, inform you of traffic conditions and other potential hindrances on the road, and provide you with alternative routes and re-routing options, but it also enables you to connect in real time with other drivers battling the roads. Learn information from others (and empathize with them), earn cool badges, and connect with friends (new and old) via Facebook, all while enduring the endless trip home or wherever. Now that the danger of boredom and frustration is significantly decreased, the only danger that exists is being able to keep your eyes on the road…

For the final eco app, I thought I’d spotlight something that encourages possibly the oldest trick in the book when it comes to being ecologically efficient. As is implied by the name, Carsharing enables just that: sharing rides, better known as carpooling. Since it follows obvious logic that fewer cars on the road = less gas emissions and more money in the pocket, Carsharing enables people to identify other travelers or drivers in their area in order to share rides and reduce the number of vehicles in use.
