Sun n Moon ($0.99) – As the name implies, this app tells you exactly when the sun and moon will rise and set for many locations worldwide. However, what makes this app special are the beautiful pictures the app delivers in conjunction with the times as well as the compass that tells you the exact direction the sun and moon will be coming from for your particular location. The app also enables Google Maps for you to set your location, and automatically handles changes in time zones and daylight savings time.

iSunBurn ($0.99) – While this may be more of a seasonal application, it is certainly useful, especially when you anticipate a lot of time outdoors. The app displays the UV index for your location or a location of your choosing, as well as what the UV index indicates and what protection it necessitates. Especially as the Summer sets upon us, this app is a great aid for avoiding harmful sun exposure during days at the beach.

RadarScope ($9.99) – This app is on the pricier end of things for a reason. It displays actual NEXRAD Level 3 radar data in its original format for any of the lower 48 United States and Puerto Rico. All information shown by RadarScope is incredibly accurate, updated every few minutes, and enables you to see exactly where and how strong storms are. If you are a meteorologist or simply a weather nut, this app is a worthwhile investment.

Windfinder (Free) – In addition to displaying weather parameters for 15,000 locations worldwide, Windfinder gets its edge from specializing on wind conditions, making this an ideal app for anyone who enjoys water sports. The app also offers real-time weather and wind observations for 3,000 locations and wind-related news updates.

World Weather ($0.99) – As is insinuated by the app’s title, World Weather provides you weather forecasts and updates for over 850,000 cities around the world. The app has GPS capabilities so that it can locate you for the most accurate information displays, and in addition to the usual weather conditions, the app also tells you of sunrise and sunset times as well as what phase the moon is in. What makes this app special are the graphics it displays, such as breathtaking clips of the sun, as the background to the information.

A nice Jump Jump fitness game came to our attention this weekend. To play, hold the iPhone/Touch firmly in your hand, listen to the music, get a knack of the rhythm and jump on cue, trying to land exactly in the middle of the target shown on the screen. The more accurate your timing, the more points you get.

The rules are simple but the strategy is very challenging. The game starts on an empty square field of boxes, with goals of two boxes wide. The puck is originally placed into the center of the field and the objective is to score goals into the opponent’s gate. In one turn, the puck may be moved into one of the eight line crossings around it (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) and a segment is drawn to mark the move. The puck can also bounce from an existing segment endings and the move is extended.

ESPN 2010 FIFA World Cup

Pros: Comes with all the essentials, including scores; schedules; news; statistics; and everything else you would expect from a report by ESPN.  This app also has the latest video highlights from ESPN.  If you’ve got an account with ESPN, the Bracket Predictor is included in the package.  You can also pick your favorite team for news updates related to them.

Cons: There are several options that require you to purchase the upgraded version at $7.99, including the live audio coverage.

Why I Like This App: For a free app, this app comes with a lot of stuff.  Most of what I’d need to keep up with the world cup is included and at no charge.

AP 2010 World Cup Coverage

Pros: The app comes with much of the same coverage as the ESPN app, such as news, videos, and schedules at the same price of free.  Also, you can pick your favorite team and receive updates specifically related to them on top of receiving world wide news.

Cons: The tournament table looks a little confusing and the main page lacks the attention-grabbing headlines one would expect from it.

Why I Like This App: I like this app for the personal customization it offers in letting you choose your own team.  It makes it simpler to follow your favored team and that’s what I think most fans are looking for in a World Cup app.

Go Africa! 2010 Complete Guide

Pros: This app gives you the scores and stats up front.  News coverage and videos are included, as well.  It also comes with extras, like Logic Football, Trivia, lists of referees, etc.

Cons: Games are given a shortcut icon while the news is filed under the extras icon.  I don’t think mini games are more important to soccer fans as news updates on their favorite players are.

Why I Like This App: The important numbers are placed on the front page; today’s games and scores are the first thing you want to see and this app makes it so.

The exercises listed are comprehensive and are neatly tagged according to the body regions and muscle groups that they benefit. Drilling down into an exercise brings up photos of how it works, with tabbed pages for description/instructions, for a log (e.g. how many repetitions, what weights, etc), with all entries date stamped automatically and, after a few days of data, also plotted on a chart. Oddly, after bringing up the log screen, there’s no way back to the exercise screen – you have to return to the main index page and then drill in again, which seems a bit inefficient.

Still, there are plenty of lovely touches, such as the ‘60 seconds’ and ‘3 minute’ timers on the log page, possibly alleviating the need to bring a stop watch with you into the gym. If you need a reminder of which exercises you’d planned to do in a session, the ‘My workouts’ section lets you select any from the iFitness database and they’re automatically ticked off after you enter data for the appropriate exercise. You can have multiple workouts, named accordingly.

‘Routines’ suggests sets of exercises according to particular themes, I especially liked the ‘Business Travel Workout’, designed to be done by the iPhone user on the move and with little or no access to gym equipment, but ‘Beginner’ and ‘Body Toning for Women’ were also noteworthy. At any point, you can view your exercise logs for the current day, week, fortnight or month, even exporting the details via email. And kudos to the developers here for including email functionality within the iFitness code – there’s no ugly reliance on closing down and using iPhone Mail instead.

Extras include a weight monitor, again logging against date and providing charting and a Body Mass Indicator monitor (ditto).

A few minor glitches in the interface aside, I was tempted to dock iFitness a star because, although, after an interruption (e.g. a phone call), it remembers completed exercises and also your intended routine, it doesn’t return you to the same exercise/log screen, which can be annoying when you’re trying to get back to where you were, possibly with sweaty fingers. However, the wealth of information and functionality won me over at every point and it seemed churlish to withold a five star rating!

At the heart of iPump Yoga are three ‘flows’ (sets) of exercise poses, each described and illustrated beautifully. You swipe your finger across the screen to progress, which seems easy enough. Tapping on a particular exercise brings up any aids you might need, including a short video showing exactly how to get from one pose to another smoothly and (presumably) serenely. Never mind tapping on the navigation bar or videos, just the swiping alone is enough to interrupt the smoothness of your exercise, although you’ll quickly learn the ‘flow’ and won’t need to consult iPump Yoga after the first few times through.

Which is not to say that the application is redundant once you’ve learnt the routines, since there’s also a facility to record the number of repetitions of each flow and your weight that day. Data entered here wasn’t always retained here though, a black mark against the application. On the plus side, there’s also a ‘Log’ where you can enter your thoughts and feelings after each session. And iPump Yoga (thankfully) remembers exactly where you got to, should you get interrupted by something tiresome like a phone call or an urge to check your email.

If your budget won’t stretch to membership of your local Yoga club or gym then this is an excellent way to learn some useful routines and to feel like you’re ‘doing it right’. Just don’t expect to match the poses shown in the photos if, like me, you’re mid-forties, male and a few kilos over your ideal weight!
