One of the best things the iPhone has done for mobile gaming is enable realtime competition. Since it is so fast, is with you at all times, and is by nature a facilitator of communication, the iPhone has taken multiplayer games to a new dimension, enabling people from across the world to engage each other in virtual competition. Checking in drives a lot of social interaction, but there is one major problem. Say you find out your friend has just checked in at a restaurant. You go over to meet him, but once you arrive, he’s no longer there. He’s gone off and checked in somewhere else. Thus starts an epic chase all over town to catch up to your friends’ updates. Since check-ins only reflect present activities and not future intentions, these instances are all too possible, creating the need for a way to track where your friends plan to be and for how long. One of the most anticipated and celebrated features of the iPhone 4 was its addition of front-facing cameras and Face Time, enabling users to take communication on-the-go to a visual realm. However, it’s been over 4 months since that revelation and yet not many are engaging in this new form of mobile contact. It’s not that Face Time is technologically flawed — many exalt it for its seamless way of enabling video conferences from a phone. The real issue lies in the fact that Face time can be used only by iPhone 4 users with other iPhone 4 users. This element is not only extremely limiting, but renders this iPhone 4 feature virtually unusable — a fact that is apparent by the lack of people actually taking advantage of Face Time.
