Although smartphones are clearly dominating the mobile market, there are more makes and models than we know what to do with. Since it is highly unlikely that you and your extended network all have the same device, a number of apps have emerged that enable multi-platform smartphone messaging, eliminating the cost of texts, and bridging the communication gaps between phones of differing kinds and service providers. Augmented reality apps have taken many forms, enabling users to alter the way they experience and live in their surroundings. Virtual Tags is one such app that is brand new to the App Store, and literally lets you supplement your surroundings with thoughts, feelings, reactions, and ideas. You can add notes and tags to everything you see around you, which other Virtual Tags users can than access using the app. You can literally see whose footsteps you’ve followed and what comments others have had in the spaces and places you visit, and you can make your voice heard long after you’ve left. Not only is this a cool way to leave your mark and document your experiences in new and old places, but it has practical uses as well. For example, if you leave or lose something in a place, then you can help others help you by leaving a note detailing what it is and how to return it to you. Furthermore, the best part about Virtual Tags, is even if you do not have internet connection in your location, you can still leave a tag — once WiFi is re-engaged, the tag will be posted to the place you intended it. From parks to landmarks, there are no limits to Virtual Tags!

With Valentine’s Day just a week away, many emotions are in the air. Sure, some of them are love, but for many, Valentine’s Day elicits feelings of nausea, resentment, disdain, or hatred for all the lovey-dovey sentiments that bombard us at every turn. If you empathize with the second group, then there is an app that, while it has been released in the spirit of love, just might be what you need. BadDates, the mobile component of badonlinedates.com, lets you laugh off those horrid dates and snicker at others’ misfortunes in their forays for love. Update play-by-plays as they happen, browse through others’ bad date tales, or watch the app’s very own “Bad Date TV” which features serial daters who make you grateful you’re not them..or with them. So if you’re lamenting flying solo on V-Day or simply hate the reminders that it tends to bring with it, indulge in BadDates and remind yourself: it could be a lot worse.

Just when you thought every kind of social network was out there, a new one emerged. Tagged.com is a recent development in the social networking sphere, and takes everything you once knew about the realm to another world. Tagged is a huge melting pot of meeting, connecting, tagging, expressing, consuming, gaming, photo uploading, thought sharing….essentially everything any other social site has ever done combined into one mecca of madness. It is truly a one-stop shop for everything you’ve ever done wanted to do with social networking (and more probably — I discovered things I didn’t even know existed in conjunction with social networking, like taking care of virtual pets and manning my own virtual cafe). And it has an app extension (of course), which enables you to harness all of its functions on-the-go. However, if you’re a fan of simple social connection, steer clear.

Exciting news! I just received word from Crisp App, a fresh new app company, that they will be releasing a Facebook Messenger app very soon. Now, I know what you’re probably thinking: another Facebook messenger, really? Well, this one stands apart from the rest. You see, Crisp App’s Facebook Messenger will enable an element that has never been seen before in the realm of Facebook chat: audio calls. That’s right, you can engage in the classic chat, or you can essentially call your Facebook friends right from the app. Even if they’re using a web browser to conduct their Facebook activities, the invitation to engage in the call will pop up as a link, and the call can proceed as normal. This means you won’t have to use up your minutes to verbally communicate with all your friends and family, it will be free to call people no matter where in the world they are (as long as they have access to Facebook), and you can add a whole new dimension to your Facebook fun. Other fabulous features of Facebook Messenger include: a built-in browser, the ability to send photos taken with your iPhone camera or from your phone’s photo library through the chat, an extensive chat history (although limited to communications conducted within the app), and a user-friendly interface that facilitates the experience. Keep your eyes peeled for an exclusive video review in which I will demonstrate all of this (and more!) and enable you to share in the excitement of this highly anticipated app.

Recently, I posted a review of Mobiola Web Camera, an awesome app that turns your iPhone into essentially a portable, wireless, high-quality web camera for your computer. Well, now there’s even more big news: Mobiola Web Camera has added audio support, so you can use it as a wireless video headset as well. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the video capabilities of Mobiola Web Camera must be worth millions — which you can now verbally share through the app. Forget FaceTime, Mobiola Web Camera is the future of video chatting, and with its new audio functions, is making face-to-face communication easier than ever.
