For many people, their Facebook profile is merely an extension of themselves. So why resort to prescribed layouts? A recent trend is emerging among apps to address this conundrum, enabling banners and enhanced profile pics to give the page a little needed sprucing. Here are a few that I’ve found that can help you come through even more: Read the rest of this entry »

It’s official: the iPhone 4 is quickly becoming the most popular camera represented on Flickr. However, is Flickr most popular photo sharing app on the iPhone 4? Since photo sharing is not as much about the quality of the pictures, but more about how you can creatively edit them, how many you can share, and how many people (or who) you can share with, there are more apps emerging that take Flickr one step further. After taking a look at these next few apps, you tell me: is Flickr soon to be a flicker in the past? Read the rest of this entry »

Following its introduction at recent events like SXSW and CTIA, Viewdle is definitely gaining positive momentum, and its mobile products haven’t even been released! In a nutshell, Viewdle takes face recognition to a new level by recognizing who is in your viewfinder as you snap photos and videos. This best-in-class recognition not only facilitates instant tagging of family and friends, but also enables you to save and use the Faceprints you’ve made whenever and wherever you go. You will be able to access Viewdle with your mobile in the following 3 products, coming soon to the App Store:

ViewdleFaces: This social addition will enable you to automatically tag and share photos to a variety of social networks, including Facebook. Furthermore, you can use pictures from your social networks to create Faceprints.

ViewdlePlaces: Similar to the app above, the Places element will be the first of its kind, enabling you to automatically tag and check-in your friends to Facebook’s “Places” application.

Viewdle Gaming: Viewdle has a game in the works that will be the first ever mobile augmented reality app to be based on real live people. The games will take place within the camera’s viewfinder, and should add and interesting enhancement to everyday interaction.

For more about what Viewdle will do for your mobile and what it can do for your desktop, visit viewdle.com

Color: Turning Green to Black or Green to Gold?

The biggest buzz on the blogosphere currently revolves around a seemingly inordinate amount of funding received by the iPhone and Android application, Color. For the price tag of $41 million, Sequoia acquired Color, a social mobile app that enables users to see what pictures people are snapping within a 100-150 foot radius and also groups pictures based on who your friends are so you’re more likely to see photos of interest. Since it is certainly not the first photo-sharing app (and based on user’s reviews, not the best either), why the huge investment? Writers such as those at TechCrunch speculate that Color’s development team alone was worth the large sum (if not more). However, opinions are not conclusive about whether Color will follow through or flop. Of course, the success of it hinges on use by an extensive population, as it should not be used alone, so the main issue will be mobilizing people to make Color a part of their mobile agenda. The release of the iPad 2 on Friday had people lining up around Apple Retailers, salivating over the thought of getting their hands on the latest in tablet technologies. While the device itself is certainly a lot to get excited about (see my earlier post: Good Things Come in Two’s), there are two more reasons to grab ahold of it: GarageBand and iMovie. Priced at $4.99 a pop, these two apps were made specially for the release of the iPad 2 and enable you to do everything you could do with their computer counterparts. Side note: GarageBand existed for the first-generation iPad, but experts agree that it is a completely different beast on the iPad 2. Now that the iPad 2 has the enhanced graphics, gyroscope, powered-up processor, and oh, not to mention, dual-facing cameras, you can take your movie and music-making inclinations to the next level and on-the-go. With these apps on the iPad 2, touch functions and universal applicability make it so that you can literally mold your creations and carry them with you, and on whatever device you choose. The next few weeks are bound to present ample photographic opportunities, between travels, holidays, the New Year, and quality time with family and friends. Instagram is a hot new app that will ensure that every moment is not only documented, but also shared. The app allows you to shoot and post as many photos as you want for free. You can follow other members, viewing, liking, and commenting on their photos, attach locations to any of your posts (when you post locations with pictures, you can also update to Foursquare), share posts through social networking media like Facebook,Twitter, Tumblr, Posterous, and Flickr, and view popular snapshots by other Instagram users. Not only does Instagram make photography even more fun and social, but it ensures that no memories will be forgotten.
