The ONE campaign has been working towards enabling each person to have a voice by learning, sharing, and advocating for the issues important to them, particularly issues relating to poverty, disease, and brighter futures for the world’s youth. And now, for the first time ever, they are making their vision and mission even more accessible by releasing the first ever advocacy-oriented app, enabling iPhone users to become agents of change ONE at a time.

In order to inspire change, ONE Campaign for the iPhone does three important things:

First, it provides the power of knowledge. By giving you all the facts on various issues and the projects that are addressing them, you can not only become more aware of everything that is going on, but you can be informed of how you can best help. With daily content, photos, videos, and push notifications for breaking news, all the information is at your fingertips; it’s up to you how to use it.

Second, it enables you to join and connect to the ONE Movement and mobilize friends through your undoubtedly expansive social networks. Since word of mouth is the most potent motivator, spread your recently acquired knowledge like fire, and see the activism catch on. Furthermore, you can use the ONE movement and networks to learn about events, meet-ups, organizations, and other like-minded people who are addressing the issues important to you. You can not only learn about measures that others are taking, but you can be sure to join in any action that can help, and even spread the word about your own initiatives.

Finally, you can help create the change. The app enables you, with one click, to dial up members of Congress (the app even takes your location into account to alert you of any local initiatives and your politician’s stance and efforts), find petitions to sign, meet up at events and rallies, and contribute in any way that you want to or can.

In essence, ONE not only puts the power of change in each individual’s hands, but also enables each advocate to raise their voices together in hopes of a better world. No money is needed or even asked for — just your time, attention, and passion for a brighter future. And even if you’re not quite ready to take action, simply learning about what is being done and how much further is left to go can be very valuable.

However, I must say, I am a little skeptical about how this will catch on. While the premise of ONE restores some of my faith in humanity, will people actually download and use it? It seems that you’d need to be an avid ONE to derive meaning from it and ensure adequate societal contribution. If people are too busy as it is, or simply lack the desire and motivation to devote their time to learning further and contributing to the important issues that the ONE Campaign addresses, what is to say that they would be moved by this app, or that having the app would change involvement in any way?

Regardless, there is something powerful about extending ONE to more networks and enabling advocacy to become that much more accessible. I sincerely hope to see ONE become the most powerful number, and have faith that the campaign, and movements like it, can plant the seeds necessary for a better, more involved, and compassionate world.

Royal Wedding ($0.99): This app has all the background info you need to know about the future King and Queen, as well as their family trees (and apparently how they are related?). Additionally, it details everything about the engagement, wedding, venue, and even has exclusive access to the ever important matter of who will make the dress. Finally, it has a photo gallery packed full of 100 exclusive, behind-the-scenes photos of the royal clan.

The Royal Wedding by NBC News (Free): With hundreds of photos, news reports, and the latest NBC news content from their very own news commentators, this app ensures no detail goes missing. Like the app above, NBC’s app for the Royal Wedding includes a family tree so you know all the key characters, and also links you to NBC’s exclusive royal wedding products and provides ideas for hosting your own viewing parties (complete with how to host the perfect tea party). Finally, you can share everything over Twitter and Facebook networks, as all the juicy tidbits unravel.

Royal Wedding Insider (Free): As the BBC’s own royal wedding app, you can be sure that every angle will be examined. With access to the blog and an insider look at BBC breaking news, you will as up-to-date as possible on all the wedding-related activities and developments as the day draws near. Furthermore, tips from BRIDES magazine an an exclusive wedding planner ensure that you will have all the tools to create all your own virtual wedding plans and learn what is and isn’t appropriate wedding behavior — just to ensure you can have a royal wedding of your own. Finally, there are plenty of videos and royal facts to prepare and excite you for the big event.

The interface of the app looks very clean, simple, and polished. This is an easy app to use for both a new user and an experienced Stumbler.

You can either choose from a selection of websites that pulse news has featured, including pulse hints which is all about helping you to get the most out of your pulse news app. Or you can search in the directory for a website you would like to save, I searched for the New York Times main page and travel section and for the Globe and Mail newspaper for example. It is 2.99 which is a fair amount to pay, however, I would argue that it is definitely worth it. The app has an expansive search engine where you can search for websites of any kind in the news sector; entertainment news, political news, tech news, etc. You can also refresh the pages everyday so that you are getting up to date news from your websites. I would definitely recommend this app for someone who is looking for a news app and wants to tap into more than one news source. Not only will you never have to pick up a newspaper again, but you could read more than three newspapers one after the other.

Mirror Apps

I always thought of these kinds of apps as mostly useless because they don’t really act like mirrors.  Up until recently, they relied on the reflection off the the screen to give you a mirror image.  But now, with the front camera, the iPhone 4 can breathe new life into these apps.  Now, hopefully, we will be able to see a clear and accurate mirror image of ourselves thanks to mirror apps that take advantage of the front side video camera.

Compasses

The new gyroscope will bring improvements to the accuracy of these apps.  We can also expect to see better positioning from GPS apps with the new capabilities packed into the iPhone 4.

Newspaper and Website Apps

With the new retina display (4 times the pixels compared to the previous incarnation of the iPhone) reading small print or viewing large websites will become easier.  Zooming in will produce less pixelated text and will make reading easier.  The featured pictures of a site will also look much better thanks to the improved resolution.  As for changes by the developers, we’ll most likely see them increase the amount of text and images on the screen and maybe add higher resolution images.

Games

With the new gyroscope, the iPhone 4 is better than its predecessors in terms of motion detection.  This means that games utilizing the gyroscope will most likely update their motion sensing programs, making games more accurate and reactive to your hand motions.  You’ll feel more in sync with your games.

Photo and Video Apps

These apps will most likely see updates in their customization effects.  Effects will be sharper because the pictures and videos themselves will be sharper due to the new camera and high resolution display.  Phone will know not only the geo-position of the camera, but also an exact view angle at the moment when picture is taken. Other than that, though, existing apps might not see major improvements outside of being made into totally new apps.

It’s hard to say exactly what changes will occur.  App developers, I’m sure, have been thinking about changes to their existing apps since they first heard about the new iPhone 4G.  But it hasn’t been all that long so they’ll still be planning these changes for awhile.  What they come up with might fit these predictions perfectly, or they might surprise us all.  I wouldn’t put it past the third party developers to come up with new innovations to bring their old apps back to the top of the app lists.

Weather Pro ($3.99) – This app gives you detailed weather reports (e.g. actual temp and what temp it feels like, wind speed and direction, humidity, chance of precipitation, and more) for many worldwide locations, and locates you automatically using GPS technology, so the reports are accurate to your exact positioning. It supports 3-hour and 7-day outlooks and delivers radar images.

Sun n Moon ($0.99) – As the name implies, this app tells you exactly when the sun and moon will rise and set for many locations worldwide. However, what makes this app special are the beautiful pictures the app delivers in conjunction with the times as well as the compass that tells you the exact direction the sun and moon will be coming from for your particular location. The app also enables Google Maps for you to set your location, and automatically handles changes in time zones and daylight savings time.

iSunBurn ($0.99) – While this may be more of a seasonal application, it is certainly useful, especially when you anticipate a lot of time outdoors. The app displays the UV index for your location or a location of your choosing, as well as what the UV index indicates and what protection it necessitates. Especially as the Summer sets upon us, this app is a great aid for avoiding harmful sun exposure during days at the beach.

RadarScope ($9.99) – This app is on the pricier end of things for a reason. It displays actual NEXRAD Level 3 radar data in its original format for any of the lower 48 United States and Puerto Rico. All information shown by RadarScope is incredibly accurate, updated every few minutes, and enables you to see exactly where and how strong storms are. If you are a meteorologist or simply a weather nut, this app is a worthwhile investment.

Windfinder (Free) – In addition to displaying weather parameters for 15,000 locations worldwide, Windfinder gets its edge from specializing on wind conditions, making this an ideal app for anyone who enjoys water sports. The app also offers real-time weather and wind observations for 3,000 locations and wind-related news updates.

World Weather ($0.99) – As is insinuated by the app’s title, World Weather provides you weather forecasts and updates for over 850,000 cities around the world. The app has GPS capabilities so that it can locate you for the most accurate information displays, and in addition to the usual weather conditions, the app also tells you of sunrise and sunset times as well as what phase the moon is in. What makes this app special are the graphics it displays, such as breathtaking clips of the sun, as the background to the information.

Oil Spill 2010 has a news focus surrounding the spill. With this app, you can view the latest oil spill videos and pictures as well as keep tabs on the most up-to-date news stories. Additionally, you can learn about the natural resources in the Gulf that will be affected by the spill as well as how you can help and what you can do if you have already been adversely affected by the spill.

BP Oil Spill Tracker also links you to the latest breaking news, but also gives you some insider insight by linking you to the White House blog, BP statements and feeds, the newest press releases about the spill, and how people are responding on sites like Twitter and Facebook. Furhtermore, the app allows people to band together in this time of need through an in-app chat function as well as the ability to send pictures of any affected areas of animals and check to see what beach reports and videos have been made as the oil spill spreads.

Oil Spill in Gulf Coast is similar to the previously mentioned apps in that it also links you to the most current spill-related news. However, it also shows you a map of the oil spill as it spreads and tracks current estimates of how much oil is being spilled by the leading theorists. It also allows you to see a to-the-second estimate of how much oil has been spilled based on an estimate that you can set. Finally, this app’s edge comes from its listing of all of the animals that are endangered by the oil spill as well as information about the animal, a map of where it resides, photographs, sound noises, and a description of what could happen because of the catastrophe.

MoGO takes a more active standpoint on the oil spill by enabling iPhone users to photograph and report any animals, water, or beaches they see that are affected by the oil. The pieces of information you provide in addition to your GPS coordinates are then immediately sent to the Mobile Gulf Observatory so that they can send wildlife experts to aid any alive and/or injured animals and so that they can continue to compile information on the environmental effects of the spill.

And finally, to end this post on a lighter, more humorous note (because we can’t be down about the spill all the time)…

Duck vs BP. With a name like this, a game can’t go wrong. While the real-life situation might be a little more grim for the ducks in the Gulf region, the game of Duck vs BP puts you as an eco-warrior duck trying to steer clear of the falling oil bubbles in an attempt to block the burst pipes. As an added bonus, the game incorporates fun environment facts so that you’re learning while you play. If only ending the oil spill was this entertaining and easy…

So there you have it — some of the leading apps for the oil crisis. The only kinds of information missing in these apps are full reports on how areas are currently being affected, what you can do in your area as the oil spill infiltrates it, and more about how to donate or help. However, aside from staying informed and knowledgeable through media like these apps, sadly, all we can do is wait until it is all over. Here’s to a solution SOON!

ESPN 2010 FIFA World Cup

Pros: Comes with all the essentials, including scores; schedules; news; statistics; and everything else you would expect from a report by ESPN.  This app also has the latest video highlights from ESPN.  If you’ve got an account with ESPN, the Bracket Predictor is included in the package.  You can also pick your favorite team for news updates related to them.

Cons: There are several options that require you to purchase the upgraded version at $7.99, including the live audio coverage.

Why I Like This App: For a free app, this app comes with a lot of stuff.  Most of what I’d need to keep up with the world cup is included and at no charge.

AP 2010 World Cup Coverage

Pros: The app comes with much of the same coverage as the ESPN app, such as news, videos, and schedules at the same price of free.  Also, you can pick your favorite team and receive updates specifically related to them on top of receiving world wide news.

Cons: The tournament table looks a little confusing and the main page lacks the attention-grabbing headlines one would expect from it.

Why I Like This App: I like this app for the personal customization it offers in letting you choose your own team.  It makes it simpler to follow your favored team and that’s what I think most fans are looking for in a World Cup app.

Go Africa! 2010 Complete Guide

Pros: This app gives you the scores and stats up front.  News coverage and videos are included, as well.  It also comes with extras, like Logic Football, Trivia, lists of referees, etc.

Cons: Games are given a shortcut icon while the news is filed under the extras icon.  I don’t think mini games are more important to soccer fans as news updates on their favorite players are.

Why I Like This App: The important numbers are placed on the front page; today’s games and scores are the first thing you want to see and this app makes it so.
