First The Heist and now Cars 2. It seems like Angry Birds is facing more and more competition, holding steady at the number 2 place on Top Paid Apps instead of the number 1 slot it held for what seemed like forever. I guess it makes sense that another puzzle game with a lot of hype and an app based on an anticipated movie hit should get enough buzz to claim the top rank, but it never fails to surprise me when I don’t see the Birds flying high in their fury. However, this leaves me wondering: will there ever be a non-game app to reign king (especially considering that all of the Top 10 Paid Apps are Games)? Has Angry Birds completely changed the competitive landscape, in particular for paid apps? Will our feathered friends ever lose their flutter, or are they forever destined to be among the top ranks? Where do you see the top trending?

Ah, the age-old debate: Android or iPhone? Well, maybe it’s not age-old, but it certainly is a pressing issue in the mobile community — and one that continues to increase in intensity. While you may think the answer, at least for this blog, is simple — considering this is IPHONEapplicationlist.com — revelations from Google’s recent I/O conference make it not as clear of a choice as it might have once been. Maybe I am behind the loop in writing about this, but I think it’s interesting to consider what the imminent Android updates will bring, especially as Summer looms ever closer, and particularly what Android’s additions and advancements will mean for the iPhone. In what has been cited as the most massive tech deal in years, Microsoft won the acquisition of Skype to the tune of $8.5 billion. As the PC world has been seeing a steady decline, with all the opportunity finding itself in smartphones and tablets, Microsoft realized that it needed to make a drastic move — no matter the costs — and found itself the proud new parents of the already popular, stand-out video conferencing service, Skype. Skype will be integrated with the Microsoft enterprise systems and will become a new division of the Microsoft company, putting the power to dictate both video conferencing standards and trends into the might hands of Microsoft. The addition of Skype to Microsoft is also one more way to ensure that even if people are not using Microsoft devices, they are still engaging with Microsoft tools and services. It’s official: the iPad 2 will make its way into our hands (and hearts) just one week from tomorrow. Immense buzz has already been circulating about its thinner, lighter, sleeker design, front AND rear-facing cameras, longer battery life, and faster, more powerful operations (thanks to a dual-core processor and A5 chip for better graphics). Furthermore, the device will come in white and black color options, along with tons of bright color possibilities in the forms of smart covers (which automatically sleep and wake your iPad 2 upon closing or opening the cover). All at the “aggressive” and agreeable price of $499. We know what this means for consumers (who are already lining up), but what does all of this mean for developers? Read the rest of this entry »

As if the iPhone hitting Verizon and the imminent release of the iPad 2 weren’t enough, a new source of buzz has everyone picking from the Apple tree once again. Bloomberg and other trusted sources have begun discussing the addition of NFC (near-field communication) capabilities to the next generation iPhone and iPad. Therefore, just by waving these devices in front of designated terminals, data can be loaded or transferred in a secure fashion. This could completely alter the way we make payments, particularly if Apple integrates this service with iTunes accounts, eradicating the need for credit cards, bus passes, and bulky wallets. Furthermore, these capabilities could enable the iPhone and iPad to become portable versions of your Mac, by storing small items of information like passwords and documents directly on the phone and larger files like photo libraries and applications in a cloud to be offered with the NFC service. Now, more than ever, the iPhone and iPad will be pocket computers, payment portals, and revolutionary pieces of technology that are sure to change life as we know it and garner enormous profit for Apple.
