Contre Jour is a new release from Chillingo, a developer already connected with great games that sometimes verge on the strange. Contre Jour does more than verge on strange, it fully crosses that line into a weird and wonderfully artistic universe unlike any you’ve played before.

Contre Jour is a new release from Chillingo, a developer already connected with great games that sometimes verge on the strange. Contre Jour does more than verge on strange, it fully crosses that line into a weird and wonderfully artistic universe unlike any you’ve played before.

<image1>

The main character, Petit, requires your help to get through each level; this help will come in the form of guiding Petit’s through lovely surroundings in order to speed him on his way to each level’s exit. The landscape presents one part of Contre Jour’s puzzling nature. Aside from the physical puzzles of the game, Contre Jour gives off a mysterious air of its own which is its own puzzle. Black and grey landscapes, animated with a flowing backdrop for little Petit’s amazing travels.

Contrast is provided by the softly lit, glowing orbs which Petit collects along the way. And the environment itself, while always portraying the same dreamlike style, offers up some intriguing variety; blue tinted environments with slightly altered physics create an underwater world with ambient lighting, while Petit navigates in the open air, far above the ground from time to time.

<image2>

To help little Petit, who certainly needs it, since he can apparently only engage in a nearly helpless rolling motion, players must solve the puzzle of navigating each level by creating a Petit-friendly path through its obstacles and pits. The controls to do so make simple use of the touch screen, leaving players to expend their energy not on complex maneuvers but on mental aerobics.

<image3>

Contre Jour tries hard to be magical, and it succeeds beautifully in an enchantingly minimalist manner. Rather than basing its surreal appeal on acid-drenched coloring, Contre Jour seems to be all about subtlety. Finesse is the name of the game here. Contre Jour is so good at creating its delicate, twilight world that the strangeness seems to disappear; what began as very odd seems normal and beautiful once players are engaged in the game. The one criticism would be the puzzles themselves—there aren’t enough of them, and because of how few there are, even at the end they don’t provide really significant challenge. Contre Jour could easily offer twice as many hours of gameplay without worrying about wearing out its welcome.

<image4>

The really impressive thing about Contre Jour is how each of its elements work together. The creative design behind the game is top notch, and the animation has a light touch that lets the minimal designs come to life. The professional score that accompanies Petit is perfectly timed to the game’s visuals, right down to the natural rhythm of Contre Jour’s in-game physics engine.

Contre Jour gives users much more than $0.99 worth of enjoyment. While I would beg the developers to expand this game in the future, I’d also expect it to come with a higher price tag at that point. Contre Jour is a doorway into a different world that you don’t’ want to miss out on.

I guess it makes sense that another puzzle game with a lot of hype and an app based on an anticipated movie hit should get enough buzz to claim the top rank, but it never fails to surprise me when I don’t see the Birds flying high in their fury. However, this leaves me wondering: will there ever be a non-game app to reign king (especially considering that all of the Top 10 Paid Apps are Games)? Has Angry Birds completely changed the competitive landscape, in particular for paid apps? Will our feathered friends ever lose their flutter, or are they forever destined to be among the top ranks? Where do you see the top trending?

A mere two weeks after their latest release, Zynga can certifiably say they have another hit. That’s right, Hanging With Friends is already topping charts and hanging the competition. Being the next in a family of highly successful social word games (like Words With Friends), Hanging With Friends certainly has the right pedigree and seems to be asserting its place in the Zynga domain. Like Words, Hanging has you playing multiple games with friends or random opponents alike (whichever you prefer), except this time the game is Hangman — with a twist, of course. The objective is to craft mystery words that your opponent has to decode, all the while attempting to decipher the words your opponent throws back to you. The game comes complete with strategic lifelines for hints, instant replay to see your opponent’s guesses, and of course the cute characters we know and love when turns deplete and peril approaches (although it’s centered around balloons, not nooses, so totally family friendly).

So here’s both the good and bad news: the game is bound to keep you on your toes (well… fingers), provide endless entertainment, and serve as another way to keep in touch or make new Friends. This means it will be yet another addiction to add to the list, and if you’re like me, another realm of competition to obsess over. But worse things have happened. Zynga: I think I can reasonably say that your games are changing the frontier of how the phone can be used to connect, play, and ponder. I thank you for your Friendly developments and I can’t wait to see what kinds of wordplay will come next!

There is no doubt that Facebook has had an impact on society as we know it, and now it’s about to take civilization to new levels — Civilization World, that is. The beloved game is expected to reach new heights this summer as it becomes integrated into a social gaming platform on Facebook. As Sid Meier, Civilization’s creator, has said in discussions about this change, the opportunities that Facebook presents in terms of how it connects people and could enable players to engage with Civilization with their extended networks provides a way to re-imagine Civilization and bring it to a more interactive, connected and social sphere. This will also allow the development team to find new ways to approach the classic strategy of the game, and will provide an approach to the fan favorite that takes our current internet culture into account. As a Facebook installation, Civilization will potentially get into the hands of an even wider audience.

Speaking of hands though, what does this mean for mobile? While a Civilization app exists, will the Facebook integration turn it into a social app on mobile devices as well? Will we see people building their civilizations with each other across multiple devices and platforms as well as from many places? As the new title, Civilization World, suggests, there is certainly a new world for the game to conquer, and it is social, mobile, and expanding. What civilizations will Civilization World conquer next?

The aim is to help three penguins, Blue, Pinky, and G, navigate harsh environments as their food supply dwindles. In order to beat a level, you must bounce all the penguins to safety while avoiding challenging obstacles and gathering all the fish. Of course, the game adheres to realistic, rule-abiding physics and requires you to think ahead with the introduction of features like safety nets, which can be used to the penguins’ advantage, but can also be a cause of their demise. Like Angry Birds, you can only unlock new levels one at a time, after conquering the previous level and earning your penguin partners a nice helping of fish, and also like Angry Birds, Hungry Penguins offers up a nice helping of addicting challenges. Aside from the precious storyline, the retina display compatibility and impeccable graphics ensure that Hungry Penguins is bound to be the next big thing in the help-the-cute-animal-physics-game saga.

Following its introduction at recent events like SXSW and CTIA, Viewdle is definitely gaining positive momentum, and its mobile products haven’t even been released! In a nutshell, Viewdle takes face recognition to a new level by recognizing who is in your viewfinder as you snap photos and videos. This best-in-class recognition not only facilitates instant tagging of family and friends, but also enables you to save and use the Faceprints you’ve made whenever and wherever you go. You will be able to access Viewdle with your mobile in the following 3 products, coming soon to the App Store:

ViewdleFaces: This social addition will enable you to automatically tag and share photos to a variety of social networks, including Facebook. Furthermore, you can use pictures from your social networks to create Faceprints.

ViewdlePlaces: Similar to the app above, the Places element will be the first of its kind, enabling you to automatically tag and check-in your friends to Facebook’s “Places” application.

Viewdle Gaming: Viewdle has a game in the works that will be the first ever mobile augmented reality app to be based on real live people. The games will take place within the camera’s viewfinder, and should add and interesting enhancement to everyday interaction.

For more about what Viewdle will do for your mobile and what it can do for your desktop, visit viewdle.com

If you’re looking for some entertainment to get you revved for the revelry, then Green Beer Guzzler is just what the Leprechaun prescribed. Very much in keeping with all the jubilations and cheer, the game requires you to grab as much green beer as you can while avoiding the falling kegs. As you reach certain point levels, though, the game gets harder as mugs and pints fall faster, requiring you to guzzle with increasing gusto. Whether or not you actually have a green beer in hand, Green Beer Guzzler certainly channels tons of St. Patty’s Day fun — without the hangover.

Social Sudoku takes the best of both worlds, integrating with Apple’s Game Center to bring you not only tantalizing single-player set-ups, but also the ability to compete in multiplayer modes. How does this work? — you may ask, considering sudoku puzzles are traditionally solved solo. Well, Social Sudoku enables you to play live against others by presenting all parties with the same puzzle. Each person tries to fill in as many empty spots as they can, scoring points and locking in each correct number. However, if you enter a wrong number, you are sent to the Sin Bin for 10 seconds while the others continue to play. Once the grid is complete, the scores are tallied, and you can, once and for all, decide who really is the sudoku master.

Well, even if you don’t, you can now harness all the excitement and fun of it on your iPhone. Just over a week ago, Electronic Arts released Bop It! for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, so you can bop it, twist it, flick it, pull it and more anywhere you go. Just like the original Hasbro game, you wait to hear the commands and react as fast as you can before the time runs out or you make a wrong move. Unlike the original, however, you can unlock additional “bopjects” (like spin it!) exclusively available for the app, choose from 4 solo and 4 multiplayer modes, utilize multi-touch display controls or move with the accelerometer, and update your scores to your Facebook, challenging all your friends to a bop off. Whether you want to cure a bad case of boredom, relive some childhood memories, or engage in a fun game, Bop It! is bopping awesome.

Jenga has brought its blocks to the iPhone sphere, and ever since its introduction to the App Store has received top remarks. As the official virtual rendition of the live version, Jenga not only involves realistic physics with its 3D imagery for a lifelike experience (you can view the block tower from all angles, as if its right there with you), but it also takes complete advantage of the power of touch — all you need to do is tap and drag to remove the blocks, and the tower responds with all the appropriate wobbles. What’s more, the graphics make it seem almost tangible! Even though the app is designed to enable Jenga to be enjoyed when alone, everyone knows that Jenga is best played in the company of others, and the app certainly encourages this social element. There are many multiplayer options, including pass ‘n play for up to 4 players and the ability to challenge players from all around the world to a friendly (or not) game. Furthermore, the app version of Jenga introduces a new element to the game — Arcade mode — where you can race against time to match block colors and earn multipliers and bonus points. Even though live Jenga is a classic to its core, the app certainly does it justice, and makes the possibilities of where, whom, and how to join in the Jenga fun endless.

While I hate to praise a game, given the existence of more meaningful or productive apps, Angry Birds certainly deserves it. Even though it was technically released late in 2009, the past year has seen the cute little avengers take the App Store by storm, launching their way consistently into the top spots. The ratings alone are an indicator of Angry Birds’ greatness, with 7000 5-star ratings and a 4.5 star average rating across tallies from 9000 reviewers — and that’s just on the iPhone platform. Angry Birds has seen paralleled success from other devices, like the Droid, and seems to be taking over the smartphone sphere. Furthermore, there are numerous apps devoted to playing and praising Angry Birds, not to mention all the Angry Birds seasonal variations. Every person I know (myself included) who has tried Angry Birds simply cannot put it down, forming an obsession with launching the birds at the precisely right angles and make them do their tricks at the exact right moments in order to kill the evil pig monsters and capture back the eggs. Finally, I think it’s safe to say that no other app has spawned potential movie deals — yes some apps stemmed from or were based on movies, but there are talks of Angry Birds becoming one. In short, no app has made an entrance like Angry Birds, with the flawless functionality, superbly addicting gameplay, unique graphics, and smart story-line to get the players properly hooked. I would go so far as to say that Angry Birds is not just a kickass game, it’s a revolution. Here’s to Angry Birds, the best app to surface in 2010.

Well, while our little wooden and plastic friends may have become obsolete, their memory lives on, and the game continues to leave a legacy — especially now that iPogs! has been released for the iPhone. While it certainly does have a different feel than the original game, iPogs! ensures all the same entertainment as you battle your way through the virtual world of Poglandia, helping Cal to defeat bullies, collect rare pogs, and slam his way to victory. With tons of new slammers and techniques, the game will never get old (then again, how could it?), and while the interface is as easy to learn as the original, it always guarantees a challenge. What’s more is the game includes Facebook and OpenFeint integration so you can continue to share the wonder of pogs with friends and engage in friendly competition. So whether you’re re-living the days of your youth or getting acquainted with a classic game, iPogs! is worth slamming into, and is bound to give you the fun, entertainment, challenge, and 90s nostalgia you seek.

One of the best things the iPhone has done for mobile gaming is enable realtime competition. Since it is so fast, is with you at all times, and is by nature a facilitator of communication, the iPhone has taken multiplayer games to a new dimension, enabling people from across the world to engage each other in virtual competition. Interestingly, only a select few multiplayer games take advantage of push notifications, en element which certainly gives them a leg up on other realtime games since the game remains active no matter what you’re using your iPhone for, and you always know when your opponents have made their moves (and therefore, when the ball is back in your court). Here are three of the best push-enabled realtime games for the iPhone:

Words With Friends: Available in a paid ($2.99) or free (ad-based) version, this game is similar to Scrabble in premise, but differs in the fact that it is strictly mutliplayer, so it doesn’t require you to do anything in order to set up and play games with friends (beyond invite people or opt for a random opponent). Engage in up to 20 games simultaneously, chat while playing, invite competitors through Facebook and Twitter, and use it as a fun way to keep in contact with new and old friends from all over.

Chess With Friends: Made by the same makers as Words With Friends, Chess With Friends is also available in premium ($2.99) or free (ad-based) versions, and is essentially the same thing as its sister app but with chess. It is the only app to offer multi-player, multi-game, push-based chess competition!

UniWar: This $0.99 app is like chess or checkers on steroids. The strategy is similar, but the game requires its players to take turns building and battling their armies while making use of the various terrains. With many maps to choose from, board options, multi-game support (up to 20), leaderboards, and endless other fun options, realtime wars certainly rage on..but in the safety of the virtual realm.

Pinch iMessenger takes texting to the next level. Not only will it save you on SMS-related fees (even internationally), but it also enables a previously unheard of experience: location-based texting. This means you can communicate with friends while finding out where they are and how to meet up with them, keep track of where you’ve been and how many places you’ve Pinched, all while earning the points and rewards associated with location-based technology (many people have earned iTunes credit and even iPads just by texting through the app!). Furthermore, the app includes hundreds of emoticons and animations to make the experience even more expressive and provides unlimited storage so you can keep your dialogues forever. While the app only works between Pinch users, it enables a whole new form of smartphone-to-smartphone communication; your friends don’t even need to have an iPhone for you to be able to Pinch them! Pinch iMessenger takes all the fun of texting to a more entertaining and rewarding realm.

Every day more and more youngsters are clutching iPhones and electronics as if they were their binkies. And while this may be cause for concern to some people for valid reasons, it is certainly not a totally bad thing — as long as apps like Bronto Family Adventure keep getting made.

Bronto Family Adventure combines the best elements of learning to read and playing fun games. The app includes a friendly, colorful, and enjoyable story about Jax, a baby brontosaurus, that has a page-by-page mode which teaches kids how to read and spell, and also includes a narration option which ensures that pronunciation and phrases are learned. Furthermore, the app has a fun, interactive game that can be played as a reward. Additionally, the app teaches the value of family — not only through the story, but in the way that it enables a more interactive approach to story time. Finally, there is the added bonus that by using and playing with this app, kids aren’t only learning how to read, etc — they’re becoming acquainted with the technology that is increasingly integral to everyday life.

So while there is certainly merit to the simpler times, to playing with imagination instead of electronics, apps like Bronto Family Adventure certainly show how the technological times can be beneficial and enjoyable to people of all ages.

For iOS, a complete, multilayered action RPG alone would be a fantastic addition to the AppStore. And Samurai Girl claims to be that, and more. But does it deliver on those big promises?

The title describes the main character of this action RPG. The player takes on the role of Hikaru, a young girl who has lost her memory—of course, the player knows that she wields a magical sword and that her family was slaughtered by the evil Delta-M in his attempt to gain possession of that weapon. As Hikaru, you fight your way through more than fifty quests to protect the sword and avenge your family. To succeed, you have to master fighting combinations, improve your swordsmanship skills, and collect a vast number of treasure items and various types of equipment. Hikaru’s a busy girl—she also has to raise a pet. More on this unexpectedly awesome addition to the game in a bit!

Controls will be familiar for RPG veterans; there’s also a full in-game tutorial and user guide to help those new to the RPG world master the coordination necessary to succeed as Hikaru. I wouldn’t say the controls are “easy”—they’re intuitive enough if you’re used to role playing games, but the action facet of the game provides plenty of complexity. It’s easy enough to pick up and play, but you’re not going to finish the game without giving the controls some attention, because Samurai Girl is a very action-heavy addition to the genre. Hikaru spends more time fighting than strolling through worlds, and you’re going to have to master special combinations.

There’s really not a whole lot I can criticize about this game. It’s been a while since I came across such an action intensive iOS game, and I’ve never come across one as fully and beautifully developed as Samurai Girl. There’s an engaging story—it’s not just a flimsy backdrop for streetfighting. There’s the scope of the game—four impressively engineered worlds. And, there’s the phoenix. Now, pet-raising isn’t exactly new to video games but a fully developed pet-raising module inside of an RPG isn’t common. And given Hikaru’s penchant for action it shouldn’t come as a surprise that your pet turns out to be a real help on your future journeys. Raise a phoenix up right, apparently, and you get to use him for transportation.

The graphics aren’t revolutionary in execution. The game is pretty standard for a side-scrolling action RPG in that respect, although I do have to say that they are well done. Since it’s basically a two-dimensional game, the designers have focused more on giving Hikaru a fierce (but cute!) attitude rather than wowing you with graphics technology. The music, however, is just as action packed as Hikaru herself.
If you are an action game fan, an RPG fan, or a fan of video games with adorable ninja school girls, don’t hesitate when it comes to Samurai Girl!

On the one hand, you have the full weight of an inimitable reputation to basically promote the game for you. On the other hand, you have the full weight of an inimitable reputation that you might not be able to live up to.

The iOS installment of Rainbow Six is right in line with the previous games as far as concept. No big surprises there, since it’s unlikely the franchise is going to depart from the concept its title is based on. If you haven’t played a Clancy Rainbow Six title, first, shame on you. Second, here’s a rundown of what to expect. Rainbow Six is the cover name for an elite team of black ops, specially trained in counter terrorism tactics. It’s an international operation with team members from around the globe, run by a super secret agency. You’re good guys but you’re practically mavericks. Clancy games usually focus on real world tactics—okay, probably not all that real world, but they require some thinking, not just run-and-gun. So be prepared to take cover. There are a couple of different modes you can play in—campaign, which takes you through the counter terrorism story line (single player), co-op, which lets you play a campaign level you’ve unlocked with friends, and just for fun FPS deathmatch mode.

No real surprises with the controls either. They are on the complex side, if you’re a very casual gamer who isn’t into the FPS scene, but if you’re familiar with first person shooters they won’t’ take too long to learn. They can get a little cluttered on the iPhone screen, though, with so many team members to orchestrate and the emphasis on shooting from cover. Assigning everyone a place to dodge bullets can get iffy.

If you collect Rainbow Six or Clancy titles in general, it’s a must-have, and you won’t be disappointed. No spoilers but you will get to meet a few new Rainbow Sixers you haven’t seen before. Same goes for those who are into the more advanced FPS offerings—this is about as good as it gets on iOS. That’s not to say there aren’t a couple of issues with the game, which I’m about to get into now, though.

Graphics. Okay, so far I’ve said nothing about this game surprised me, and while pleased with it, I wasn’t too impressed with the pretty shallow attempt at a storyline (or bothered by it, I’m here to shoot bad guys), or the controls. But the graphics and the layout of the levels are really pretty awesome for iOS. Except… maybe too awesome. Here’s the thing, if you’re going to do great graphics, make sure the OS can handle them. In a couple of places, the graphics hang up severely—bad news in a fire fight.
You knew this game wasn’t going to be cheap, but $6.99 is worth it if you want a console quality game on that teeny tiny phone of yours.
