The concept, like the interface is very simple and easy to use. The first page of the app allows you to go into My Comics or the Digistore. My Comics will take you to your Collection of Digicomics which in the beginning is obviously not a real Collection but you can very easily build on the comics you have. While the app is free, buying the comics in the store is not, most of the comics are only .99 cents but it is something to be aware of. There are free download features however, so the amount of money you spend on comics depends on how you use the app. I still think the app is worthwhile because each Digicomic is about 170 slides. Each slide is very dynamic and shown in a way that supports this. I was really impressed by the quality of each image and found myself sincerely amused by the app. I think it would be a great way to entertain yourself and your kids on a long trip for instance. You will both be comforted knowing your Disney friends are with you. The app also has featured Digicomics,a What’s New tab and displays the comics by category and character.

iBooks (Free) — The appearance of iBooks is what sets it apart, with illusions of an actual bookcase holding your books and the look of actual book pages. While some other apps have similar aesthetic attributes, iBooks, to me, is the best in that regard. In terms of features iBooks offers, it includes: an iBookstore that enables you to purchase books and read free samples before buying, adjustable screen brightness and font for the easiest reading experience, automatic syncing feature between all devices you own so that everything is on the same page, the ability to highlight and add notes to the text, a page navigator, a function that speaks the words, and the ability to open, read, and store PDFs from email. In the App Store, iBooks is rated 3.5 stars, and while it is an overall good app, users have been frustrated with the amount of bugs in downloading books and some kinks when downloading and opening PDFs.

Good Reader ($0.99) — Good Reader isn’t an e-reader app in the same sense as the previous apps, as it specializes in PDF and TXT files. The app allows you to transfer such files directly from your computer and read them on your device. This includes any books that you download, as long as they are in the proper format and on your computer. The app easily integreates with servers like MobileMe and includes a hyperlink feature so you can quickly jump around in each document as well as a text search option. Good Reader is rated 4 stars on the App Store, and users say they wish there was a way to annotate and mark documents, but the app is otherwise great.

While DC Comics is not the first comics publisher to do this(Marvel comics already has its own app by Comixology), the DC Comics app is also built by Comixology and has many of the same functions that Marvel has, such as letting you purchase individual series and have push-notification for new series alerts. Customized reading options, such as the guided view by panel and full page view, do exist as well.

So I guess the biggest comics publisher going digital really means that we are deep, deep in a new technological age. Anyway, we don’t have to walk or drive to a store to buy the comics anymore, and you can read countless comics just about anywhere with a single devices. iPad definitely makes the experience even better.

This application is aimed at authors who need a quick and concise refresher in how to format their references for academia. The application is not a primer in academic referencing, and assumes that you have some basic experience in referencing content.

You really can’t blame the developers for sticking their URL in the product name here, for once. The world of dictionary applications and web sites is competitive enough that to really stand out, such an app has to be both very good and free (or nearly free). This is free, though there are occasional relevant self-promoting banner ads, and the interface and functionality are a joy to use, hence the high star rating. The dictionary is the ‘Random House’ one, not that well known, while the thesaurus is the best known in the world, Roget’s, adding a welcome stamp of authority.

The first nice touch that you’ll notice is the use of different, striking colours for the main dictionary and thesaurus pages. In addition to giving a big clue as to which module you’re currently in, the same colours are used for the icons showing matches in the ‘Search’ page – all very intuitive. Word matches are very good, with even British spellings recognised (despite this being a USA product), even though the entries are essentially redirects to the American version of the word. The information given, in all modes, is nicely implemented into a standard iPhone OS ‘look and feel’.

Importantly, and despite this product being largely the creation of an online dictionary site, all the main word and thesaurus information is stored locally, i.e. on your device, so you don’t need an Internet connection to look up words or their synonyms. So if you’re miles away from Wi-Fi and also don’t have a good 3G signal, you’ll still be able to use the application.

In a sensible design decision, there are two features which do need to go online: firstly, the audio previews of each word, of necessity requiring significant storage space – these download quite fast over the air and are typically played within a couple of seconds. And secondly, the ‘Word of the day’, designed to increase your vocabulary – this is presumably set manually on the developer’s servers.

The only slight confusion, and the reason why Dictionary.com drops a star in its rating, is that the dictionary’s not quite as complete as you might think. Many words are ‘resolved’ down to their main variant and you’re left to complete the related words in your head. For example, ‘coagulability’ is in the main listing, in that it comes up as a ‘quick match’ as you type. But when the entry is shown, you’re looking at (and hearing, via the preview) ‘coagulable’ – you’ll get the gist of what the initial word means, but it’s a shame that so many complex words are rationalised down in this way.

Although there’s no ‘browser-like’ forwards and backwards ‘history’, you do get a ‘Recent’ list, which keeps track of everything you’ve viewed – if anything, this is even more useful. Overall, for a free application, you really can’t fault ‘Dictionary.com – Dictionary and Thesaurus’ in terms of value for money(!) and commercial competitors will have to really stretch out in order to beat it on functions too.
