Whether or not you’ve been avoiding the reality of it, Tax Day is just over two weeks away. While filing taxes is certainly not everyone’s idea of a good time, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some technologies that can help make the process a bit less stressful. Here are 3 apps that don’t cost a dime and make filing taxes and waiting for returns a little less taxing:
MyTaxRefund: If you e-filed taxes, then this app takes a lot of the worry out of waiting for your tax returns. All you have to do is answer a few simple questions (it takes no more than 2 minutes!) and then the app tracks your e-filed federal tax return to show you its status, tell you whether the IRS has been accepted or rejected it, and estimate when you will receive your tax refund. Furthermore, if the return is rejected, the app notifies you of how to fix it so you can make sure you receive your return as quickly as possible. Plus, MyTaxRefund is from the makers of TurboTax, so you know that they are about as reliable as it gets.
TaxCaster Mobile: This app eliminates any and all surprises you may encounter when filing taxes. After you simply and easily answer some basic questions about things like income and deductions, the app will provide estimates of what you will owe and what you will be refunded. While this app does not do taxes for you, it certainly helps you plan ahead, and is even useful year round when you want to know what the tax impact will be for various scenarios (by using the “What If?” button to see what effect certain changes could have). Again, this is a TurboTax affiliate, so you can be sure that it is a worthwhile tax tool.
SaneTax: If you would rather let a professional handle your taxes (and you’re prepared to pay), this free app gets you into contact with the best. Once you register and login, use the mobile app to upload all of your tax-related documents and a tax agent will prepare and e-file them for you. It is based on online interaction, so you do not have to schedule any trips or phone calls into your hectic life, and you can count on having someone there to answer any and all questions you may have. Once everything is finished, you pay the agent using PayPal or a credit card and check your taxes off your list of things-to-do.
