Organic, local-grown, pesticide-free vegetables are taking positions of prominence in the grocery market.  The idea is that these are healthier, tastier, and more economically sustainable than other sources of food.  I don’t know whether this is true or not, but I will admit there is a sort of comfort knowing where your food comes from.  But why stop at buying these kinds of produce when you can make your own?  With the right kind of attention and willingness to learn, you can grow your own food free of pesticides or preservatives.  Vegetable Garden Guides will show you how to grow your own foods, providing you with a useful tool whether you want to be more environmentally friendly or just like the taste of homegrown vegetables.

The app is organized under “common vegetables,” “herbs and spices,” and “less common vegetables” and under these categories are over ninety vegetables and herbs to choose from.  Each vegetable has detailed instructions for growing, managing, and harvesting a plant, as well as how many of each plant is needed per person.  These instructions are easy to follow and are useful for the experienced planter as references as well as for the beginner-level grower as a tutorial.  If you want to grow a vegetable but it’s not the right season, you can save the instructions under your favorites.

For a variety of reasons, you’re probably paying more for organic and local foods than regular foods from the supermarket.  So although you’re paying $1.99 for this app, you’re probably saving yourself hundreds by building a self-replenishing supply of produce in your own garden.  Even if you’re not into the whole sustainability movement or any other environmental cause, I’d still say this app is well worth it in monetary returns.
