Whoever thought that software would become a self-defense weapon? With UrgentPic, that’s exactly what happens. The app enables you to take a picture whenever you are in a dangerous situation and then send it, an alert, and your location to designated contacts. Therefore, your contacts not only know what’s going on, where you are and why you need urgent help, but if you should unfortunately need evidence to present to the authorities, you and those close to you have it.
My only qualm with this app is, would this really be the first thing you think of when you’re in a threatening circumstance? Personally, my first instinct would be a mixture of panic and dialing 911, and I’m not sure I would necessarily think to spend time scrolling through my iPhone apps so that I could take and send a picture alert. Also, in situations that would warrant the use of this app, I am also skeptical about whether or not you would even be able to access and utilize its features (for example, if you’re being mugged).
I think the app certainly has a noble premise and could be a lifesaver in particular situations. It could even be an important tool if you happen to be a witness to a compromising encounter. I think it is a great step towards being able to defend ourselves more effectively, but I do not necessarily think it is the answer. What do you think — is UrgentPic essential for our safety or is it simply excess?
