Following Luke’s blog about Kayak, I figured I would delve a bit deeper into the app since I also think it’s a great find particularly during the Summer when the question is not if you should travel, but where to and how. Especially now, during trying economic times, choosing the right place is just as important as ensuring it’s the right cost. That’s where search engines like Kayak.com come in — it allows you to compare every travel site to ensure you’re getting the best deals on the best vacations. However, you may not always have your computer handy when cooking up travel plans, so here’s the good news: Kayak also has a free iPhone app, so you can have the best travel tips in the palm of your hand.

The best part about Kayak is its simplicity – right off the bat you get to choose what it is you’re looking for: Hotels, Flights, Cars, etc. Each element of the app has the same smooth interface — you enter all relevant information, and you are automatically presented with the best listings, sorted by various standards (so you can choose, for example, if you want to go cheap or classy). As I said, all listings are products of compilations from all travel-related sites, so instead of leafing through everything, it’s presented to you in one easy screen. If you decide you like something and want to visit it later or want to share it with someone else, you always have the option to e-mail the link to the search you’ve conducted.

What’s nice is the Kayak app also provides you with information you will need after you’ve already made all the arrangements. For example, through the app, you can see what each U.S. airport offers in terms of restaurants, WiFi, lounges, ATMs, and more. You can also access a flight tracker, airline fees, and a listing of all the trips you’ve booked through Kayak. The app also links you to airline information for all airlines worldwide and gives you the option to share your findings on Facebook and Twitter.

With the Kayak app, booking a vacation is a breeze! No need to pay a travel agent to find deals for you — Kayak will get the best prices in the best places, and, thanks to the app, you can use it anywhere, anytime! This is especially great for spur-of-the-moment trips, grand getaways, and anything in between. However, the only thing I think this powerhouse app is missing is a feature that also lets you book activities in your desired destinations. Deals on tourist attractions, things to do, and even places to eat or nighttime activities could also give Kayak a huge edge. However, for the travel and stay elements of vacations, no app is as comprehensive or money-saving as Kayak.
