Have you ever dreamed of being a great master of something? Thomas Edison once said, “genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration,” and recent studies show that he was perfectly correct! Studies are showing that the best of the best only reach that point of mastery after 10,000 hours practicing their craft. This idea has recently come into the public eye thanks to Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers which provides several examples of famous geniuses who reached their peaks only after practicing 10,000 hours. Level Me Up HD! for the iPhone takes this quantified mark of genius and makes it into a game for your benefit. It encourages you to reach these levels of mastery with a reward system much like one out of a role-playing video game.
Level Me Up HD! allows you to keep track of the hours you spend honing the skills you wish to become proficient at or master. Create a profile for yourself, then enter the skill and number of hours you put into the skill. based on the number of hours you have put in, the app will give you a level and title that reflects your progress. You can choose whether to gain levels in a linear fashion (practice x number of hours and gain a level) or to gain them much like experience in role-playing games (the higher the level, the more experience you need to reach the next level). It also differentiates between practicing for proficiency and practicing for mastery. Once you’ve reached 1000 hours, you have reached proficiency in the skill you are practicing and the app acknowledges this by changing the levels to “epic” levels. These epic levels and the titles such as “practiced” or “apprentice” are meant to motivate you to practice harder. This app makes practice into an entertaining game while getting you to work hard to improve yourself.
