Augmented Reality: Going Beyond What’s Really There

Simple were the times when reality was exactly as we saw it. Now, apps are introducing augmented experiences to what’s right in front of our face. By utilizing the iPhone camera, many apps enable you to see things that aren’t immediately there, be it stores and restaurants in the nearby areas, information about your surroundings, or explosions of cars you see that you don’t particularly like. These “augmented reality” apps show what’s there in conjunction with what’s not, and could very well be the future of how we perceive reality, by enhancing it with information, fabrications, suggestions, others’ feedback, and advertisements.

An example of such an app is Sekai Camera. Using this app, you pan the camera around, and the app shows you all establishments and Sekai Camera users to the North, South, East, and West of where you are. In other words, even though you don’t actually see things, they are still projected into your immediate thoughts. Furthermore, the app allows you to interject text, video, and picture comments to float around in your supplemented cyber-world.

While many people may find the concept of augmented reality to be a little unsettling, it is very possible that it will become a mainstream element of society. How do you feel about it and the apps that implement it? Have you found any uses for augmented reality that make it better than the real thing?
