In the old days, artists used to draw each frame by hand in order to create the first cartoons.  We’ve come a long way in animation since then, but if you’re feeling nostolgic, there’s an app that allows you to go back to the basics.  Animation Creator is an app for the iPhone that allows you to draw your own animated shorts.

It gives you a selection of drawing tools like the brush, the rectangle, and the positioner to create your frame.  Once you’ve finished the first frame you can create another frame by pressing the plus button, or you can delete your frame if you don’t like it by pressing the minus button.  You can also copy the frame with the copy button in between them.  Once you’re done drawing your frames, you can hit play to watch your creation in action.  You can even control the speed at which the app plays your frames (anywhere between half a frame to 24 frames per second).

Although this app lacks a selection of backgrounds and comes with a limited amount of drawing effects, it is still a very nicely done flipbook app.  At $.99, this app is a good deal for cartoonists looking for a new medium or for the average user looking for a fun and interesting app.
