Google Latitude, a Google web application that hit the web a few months ago, has just become accessible on the iPhone through the Google iPhone app or directly from the browser at http://www.google.com/latitude. Latitude allows you to find out exactly where your friends are, access directions to them, and send them an email or message, with or without a GPS on your device (you can manually enter your location).

While this may sound like a stalker’s dream app, don’t fret, there are security settings so that you can decide who gets access to your location. The only downfall is that your friends must be Latitude users in order to access their locations, but considering the application is free, this is a minor issue (just make sure all your faves get it!). Regardless, Latitude brings social GPSing to a whole other level.

Functionality similar to Google Latitude is available to the users of instant messaging services through the multi-headed instant messenger IM+. Check it out, it is really cool to set your IM status as “I am here” so your friends can constantly see your geographical location and bump into you accidentally.
